
Maenad is the female companion of the god Dionysus. In this case a small bronze application-sculpture, most probably decoration of a bigger vessel used for vine preservation during festivities. It was found in a monumental grave in Tetovo, northwest Macedonia. It is dated in the VI century BC by its stylistic qualities and the decoration. It is an example of the extraordinary treatment of the late archaic period in Macedonia. The Maenad is an impressive memory of the widely spread belief in the man-god Zagreus who will remain in the memory of those heroic historic times as the great god Dionysus. The bronze Maenad is presented in the moment of the dance of the permanent life.
